Start Laughing

What happens in a laughter session?

Aerobic laughter is practiced in groups.

A certified laughter leader, guide or coach will normally lead a group, although anyone can be trained to lead laughter sessions.

The leader welcomes the group and leads them through a series of warm-up routines that include clapping, chanting and physical movement. This relaxes the inhibitions and prepares us to laugh. Breathing exercises are done to loosen up the diaphragm.

We then start a series of laughter exercises. It could be said that laughter is initially 'acted out' in exercises that combine laughter and method acting. Due to group dynamics real laughter soon takes over, and the leader guides you through a series of laughter exercises and breathing exercises.

Sessions can last 30-60 minutes.

How will aerobic laughter affect me?

As we become adult we lose our child-like ability to laugh for no reason.

Laughter helps adults to regain their ability to laugh without intellect. You will quickly rediscover the joy and happiness of laughing for the sake of laughing.

What is free laughter?

Depending on the group and venue, your leader may induce a session of free laughter, during which laughter is allowed to rise out of each participant like water from a fountain.

This is hard to imagine until you experience it, but it is one of the most wonderful experiences you can enjoy. Free laughter is a powerful tool for getting in touch with our emotions and often leads to positive cathartic experiences.

Free laughter is always followed by a guided relaxation session.

How much does it cost?

In India where hundreds of thousands of people practice laughter daily, laughter yoga is found in social laughter yoga clubs which are free. These clubs meet in public parks and have no venue or other costs.

In western countries it is more common to pay for laughter sessions, although social laughter clubs can also be found. The cost is normally similar to that of visiting a yoga or fitness studio.

Do we need special clothes or equipment?

No special clothing or equipment is required, although loose casual clothing is probably most comfortable. In corporate environments we normally remove jackets and ties.

We do not use any equipment or mats. Laughter is often practiced outside in parks, on beaches or other places of great natural beauty. Indoor venues work equally well and are more conducive to laughter meditation. Indoor sessions can be quite noisy.

Setting up a laughter club

If there isn't a laughter venue near you, why not set up your own social laughter club? Just recruit a group of 10 or more people who want to laugh.

LaughSA runs a special program to provide training at your home or venue for the group and social laughter leaders. This service can be provided across South Africa at a reasonable cost.

We also run public seminars on laughter and provide laughter training and international certification.

Seminars can also be arranged for companies, schools, aged care centers, hospitals, government departments and other interested parties. Seminars normally include an audio visual presentation, a talk on the history and benefits of laughter , and a laughter session.
