He spends much of his year traveling the world running public information seminars and training Certified Laughter Yoga Leaders and Teachers.

Since starting in 1995 laughter yoga has spread without promotion to more than 55 countries with more than 5,000 social laughter yoga clubs.

Hundreds of thousands of people around the world laugh their way to improved health every day.

Laughter yoga is a fun and easy exercise regime that has a surprisingly powerful effect on our body, mental and emotional health.

 

Meet Dr Madan Kataria

The Indian medical doctor who started it all.

In 1995 Dr Kataria was writing an article: ‘Laughter is the best Medicine” for a Medical journal. He studied everything, medical and scientific, on the benefits of laughter. His findings on the positive effects of laughter were so profound that he determined to find a way to prescribe laughter to his patients and others who needed it.

At 4am on 13 March 1995 he decided to start a laughter yoga club. At 7 that morning he went to a nearby park. He told many of the regular visitors (in India it is common to visit your normal park for a walk or jog every morning) about his idea of a laughter yoga club and asked them to laugh with him. Most replied: "Doc, are you OK?" Four people agreed to laugh with him and so the first laughter yoga club was born. A week later there were 55 people laughing together. Today there are over 5000 laughter yoga clubs in more than 50 countries.

At first members of the new club told each other jokes and funny stories to trigger laughter. After two weeks they ran out of jokes that were not offensive or negative. A few of the ladies asked him to stop the laughter yoga club because of the negative jokes. But he would not give up. He told them to come back the next day, as he would have new "breakthrough technology" for them. He had 24 hours to come up with breakthrough technology to make people laugh without jokes or humor. And he did.

He discovered that according to research, our bodies cannot tell the difference between real and 'acted out' laughter. The benefits are the same. The next morning he explained his finding to the group and asked for them to try something new. "Let us act out laughing, just for one minute. Research says we will get the same benefits, so let's try".

They tried it and their acted out laughter soon became infectious real laughter. They laughed louder, longer and with more energy than they had in all the previous sessions. Laughter yoga was born.

Laughter yoga is an exercise regime that combines guided laughter exercises with yoga breathing to bring more oxygen to the body cells. This oxygen boost gives enhanced vitality, energy and a feeling of real well-being.

Laughter Training

You don't need any training to enjoy laughter.

If you want to run your own laughter clubs or offer laughter in other venues you can train as a laughter professional.
